Indian special !

For the final ending of our journey blog, some pearls from India.

Signs and billboards seam to be on a very important place in India. Some of them are quite good, but some of them, even though being in English, quite difficult to understand due to cultural difference, thus very funny to read.

Signs on the road:

"Donate blood in blood bank not on this road"

In Sikkim most signs are for the protection of the environment.

In Kerala: "Smile ! You are in God's Own Country" - India's richest state, thus truly The "God's own country"

This sign is actually completely unnecessary, because drivers continuously sound horn anyway.

"Car wash center"

On Nepalese-Indian border. Very motivating sign, when you happen to travel to Kakarbhitta and just can't wait to arrive there already.

Signs in restaurants:

In southern states of India we were often very confused when trying to find a place to sleep and entering to some kind of "Hotel", instead of being showed rooms, we were nicely asked to sit into the table and soon banana leaves and food was in front of us....

Hotel = Restaurant

Good one !

MEALS READY ! This became our favorite sign. It could be only seen during noon and it meant lots of good food !

Meals ready ! Hallelujah !

Some signs that were simply very nostalgic:

"Lenin Centre"

Some bans :

In the bus: In Europe - no standing, no ice cream, no chatting with the driver. In India - no smoking, no spitting, 10 standing.

....etc. etc.....

Just some funny or nice signs :

spooky place !

We would appreciate, if some native English speaker would explain us, what this actually means.

Would you like any body part ? Yes, but not just any, hi-tech, please !

"Lift not available to go down or up". Ok ! But maybe from side to side then ?

Water bottle. EU rules of labeling products are not even close to as strict as in India.

Spiritual walk in Pushkar.....through cow shit, rubbish and millions of flies.

In train station........
in case you fancy old drinking water

And finally two wishes for the new year :

DO NOT GET TIRED, GREAT EXCITEMENT IS AWAITING !

KEEP UP THE SPIRIT, THE DAY (READ: THE YEAR) IS YOURS !

Happy New Year 2011 to everybody !

Aitäh !
Tegelikult oleme juba mõnda aega Euroopamail tagasi ja sellest päevaraamatust on saanud rohkem nagu meenutusraamat. Pesitseme nüüd Slovakkias Kõrgtatrate jalamil, kus kõik uued-vanad sõbrad-tuttavad on teretulnud !

EXCELLENT POST B & K :))) Laughing hard from all the funny signage!! :D

The one you were asking about ("Determination of sex is punishable") - means that during pregnancy it's illegal in India to tell parents the gender of the unborn baby. This is because "boys" and much more desirable children than "girls" - in a society where 99% of marriages are arranged, the wifes always join her husbands family and as such there is no help/monetary incentive to having a girl and raising her up (costly)... having boys is better as they'll bring their wifes to help in the poor families, homes, will go to work, earn higher salaries ... In India even have a nasty proverb "having a girl is like watering neighbors garden". Knowing the gender of baby is a girl the parents may decide to go for illegal abortion / kill the baby and try to have a baby boy instead... this is a law implemented by Indian government to stop bestial illegal abortion practice previously very widespread
